Tom Cruise’s latest “Mission: Impossible” film inspired a recent Wall Street Journal story describing his famous sprinting style: “arms slice rapidly through the air, elbows locked at a sharp right angle, fingers spread wide,” along with high knee raises and upright posture.
Is this good running form? WSJ reporter Lane Florsheim asked experts to weigh in. Ned Trim, head coach of the Mile High Run Club in New York City, observed: “He’s never running at an efficient, economical pace. It’s always just a complete all-out sprint.” But hey, he’s not doing a marathon. Who wouldn’t sprint when they’re dodging bullets and bombs? Trim also remarked that Cruise gets really tense. “You see every vein popping…which adds to the drama” but might hurt his performance. Bobby McGee, a longtime coach of elite athletes, said Cruise’s 100-meter time has been calculated at roughly 11.5 seconds, “which is a world-class high-school-girl kind of time.” Hmmph. Let’s settle that with an invitational meet at The Villages Charter High School. Cruise gets to run in lane 9 of the women’s 100m – wearing a full suit and tie. The story noted that Cruise, age 61, “remains committed to doing his own stunts even as he approaches senior citizenship.” There’s no mention of the precise age at which senior citizenship begins. Perhaps another invitational is called for, with Cruise competing against The Villages’ sprinters in the 60-64 age division. Ha! We’ll see about those popping veins! For my 2 cents, at age 60, he's not even in the zip code of 11.5.

Good point. It's best to take any celebrity's claims with a grain of salt. As Tom Cruise said in "Jerry Maguire": "We live in a cynical world. A cynical world."
